Similar era, similar size, but this is an X1/9.

Yup, definitely TR7. I came here to say exactly what you did

That, my friend, is the worst sort of car. A car that looks like so much fun! So small! So sporty! It will lure you in with promises of twisting mountain roads and clipped apexes. It will break your heart and stomp on it. That is a British sports car.

Growing up (like 10 years old) my friend's dad had one of these. I thought it was impossible for a cooler car to ever exist.

I was 9 when those hit the roads in 1975. I remember the ads, and seeing many of them on the road. I used to cut the two-page car ads out of my Sports Illustrated and hang them on the wall. I'm sure I had a TR7 or two hanging up there.

When I was 12, my friend's dad got one of the original RX-7s. He was one of those guys who always had to have the newest, coolest things. It was bright yellow, and I was in love. He gave me a ride in it, and it was my first taste of performance.

I don't know all that much about them, but I do recall they had a pretty poor reputation for reliability. But again, it's British.

I hear you. My aunt had a brand new 300Z (circa 1986) and all I wanted to do was wash it for her...and I remember insisting on wearing a bandanna when I did. Who knows...

A bandana? Well, it was 1986.

Damn right. You know, the rebirth of the 80's is more painful than I feared. I walked into my corner coffee shop yesterday and the hip kids behind the counters were blasting Heart. It struck me how I hate it as much now as I did then.

Yeah, but I had a crush on the skinny one (doesn't that sound terrible?). In spite of it being the '80s, and liking the new stuff, I was still stuck in the '70s, listening to The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Buffalo Springfield, Uriah Heep, Jethro Tull, and the like.

Wait... Are you sure? I hardly recognize the x1/9 without rust everywhere (and the smell of brake fluid/oil/etc.).

T-top, wedge, light, midship, Italian, Bertone. I need nothing more.

There's a ratty example for sale locally and I want it badly. It even has the front airdam, which makes it look mean as all heck.

Mmmmmmm... It's the same colour as my first car, which was also done by Bertone...

There was a bright green one that parked across from my house in VA back in the late '70s. I fell in love with it. Then I learned that they only have 75HP.

Hah, well, let's see...

The 1290cc lump came with 75HP, while in USA '75-'78, they had 63HP due to emissions.

1979 in USA saw a bump to 75HP with the 1498cc engine and fuel injection.

Now from what I'm seeing, there seems to have been a 1476cc engine in EU as well, pushing 82HP. And finally, sometime post 79 in Europe, the 1498cc version managed 86HP.

However, compare that to the curb weight of 1940lbs in early models and 2121lbs in later... The power to weight isn't all that bad.

Now, I assume there is room for tuning, since some race versions made 160HP. That seems healthy enough, if you ask me. :)
